Dr. Beverly Jackson is a retired educator, curriculum writer, and music consultant dedicated to supporting families, teachers, and communities through culture-centered learning. Through the Porchlight Learning Collective, she shares educational resources, afterschool learning ideas, music education systems, and reflections on lifelong learning. When she isn’t writing or teaching, you’ll likely find her on the porch planning lessons, tending her garden, sewing, or relaxing with her Shih-Tzu companion.

My name is Dr. Beverly Jackson, and I am a retired educator, curriculum writer, music consultant, and lifelong advocate for literacy, culture, and community learning.
After decades in education—teaching, mentoring, and designing learning programs—I created The Porchlight Learning Collective as a place where education, culture, and everyday life meet.
The Porchlight is built on a simple belief:
Learning should feel like sitting on a welcoming porch — thoughtful, peaceful, and full of wisdom shared across generations.
My Journey in Education
I spent my professional career working in education as a teacher, music educator, and curriculum developer.
My work has always centered on helping children and families grow through:
• literacy
• music education
• cultural learning
• afterschool programs
• parent engagement
Over the years I have written curriculum, guided students, supported families, and helped educators build stronger learning environments.
My passion is helping people see that education does not only happen inside institutions — it also happens in homes, churches, neighborhoods, and communities.
That belief is the foundation of the Porchlight.

Why I Started the Porchlight
After many years in education, I began to think deeply about where learning truly happens.
Of course, schools and universities are important institutions. But I have also seen powerful learning take place in homes, churches, community centers, libraries, and around family tables.
Some of the most meaningful conversations about culture, literacy, music, and life happen in quiet everyday spaces.
The image that came to me was the front porch.
In many communities, the porch has always been a place where people sit, talk, reflect, and share wisdom across generations.
I created The Porchlight Learning Collective as a digital version of that space — a place where learning, culture, and thoughtful conversation can continue in a calm and welcoming environment.
The Porchlight is meant to feel like a place where you can pause, reflect, and gather ideas that strengthen families, communities, and future generations.
What I Believe About Education
Education is the development of curiosity, discipline, imagination, and cultural awareness.
Throughout my career as an educator and curriculum writer, I have believed that learning should:
• strengthen literacy and thinking
• connect students to culture and history
• support families as learning partners
• encourage creativity through music, writing, and the arts
• prepare young people to build meaningful lives and livelihoods
Education also requires community.
Teachers, parents, mentors, elders, and neighbors all play a role in shaping the learning environment around a child.
At the Porchlight, I share ideas and programs that support family learning and community knowledge, which prepares one for lifelong learning. And, the development meant of a lens that says "Who am I to myself, family, community, and world.
A Day on the Porch
Many of my ideas begin on the porch.
A quiet morning or afternoon on the porch is often where I plan new lessons, outline blog essays, or sketch ideas for educational programs.
You may find a notebook beside me, filled with reflections, curriculum notes, or thoughts about culture and learning.
Sometimes I’m preparing ideas for a music program or writing prompts for families in an afterschool lesson.
Other days, I’m simply enjoying the rhythm of everyday life — tending to plants in the garden, listening to music, practicing and making music, watching documentaries and lectures online, or thinking about the next project.
And very often, my little black-and-white Shih-Tzu companion, wearing her signature ponytail bow, is nearby keeping watch over the porch.
These quiet moments are where many Porchlight ideas begin.
From the porch, small ideas grow into lessons, programs, and conversations meant to support learning in homes and communities.
